Middlesex

Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

First sentence: "I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974."

Quote #1: "I didn't know death would be like this, lieutenant. I feel close to you. I'm gone. I've taken that trip to Hades, yet I can still see you. Listen to me. Death is not the end. This is what I've discovered. We remain, we persist. The dead see that I'm one of them. They're all around me. You can't see them, but they're here. Mothers with children, old women-everyone's here. Tell the cook to bring me my lunch."

Quote #2: "...the tiniest bit of truth made credible the greatest lies."

Quote #3: "It was happening all the time, unnoticed, and it was the thing that really mattered. What really mattered in life, what gave it weight, was death. Seen this way, my bodily metamorphosis was a small event."

Last sentence: [Potentially a spoiler.]

You must read this. This book skyrocketed to my top 3 favorite books by the time I was 25% done with it. It was one of the first books I really really didn't want to end. It took me an eternity to get through it, both because it's over 500 pages and because I felt like I rationed myself bits each day so that it wouldn't be over so soon. I found going in not knowing anything about it was great too. Just give it a shot if you see it at a used bookstore or at the library. Eugenides is amazing. I'd read The Virgin Suicides and now can't wait to read The Marriage Plot. I'm not usually a fan of writers who are still alive, but he's an enormously important exception. (Indigo was also named after a phrase in the book that completely stuck in my head. "Indigo bathwater." I don't know why certain things affect me, but I loved that phrase.)

Next up: The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin

Hester & Pearl

Monday, September 17, 2012
Hester & Pearl is a Long Island-based baked goods business run by Fran and Emily Spada.  Their shop, launched earlier this month, offers brownies, bars, cookies and breads. Emily, who also runs a jewelry business, and her mom started the shop in hopes of developing branding and raising funds for their future brick and mortar shop on Long Island. Never having purchased food from Etsy, I didn't know how things typically went, but sitting here writing this now with a mouth full of cinnamon cake... I'm impressed.

I ordered the Cinnamon Cake Squares after much internal debate (as the pumpkin bread looked really good,too). They were shipped out quickly and arrived at my door this afternoon.

I was impressed by the packaging. Everything was completely intact and looked pretty. All the cakes were individually wrapped in wax paper - preventing me from eating a thousand in one sitting. I plan on taking one to classes with me, so the packaging is perfect.

Eh. Look at it. They were absolutely delicious. The cake was moist (can someone come up with a better word though...'moist' is sick, but these were so tasty). The cinnamon, chocolate and walnuts on top were crunchy and sweet but not too sweet. I think I made the right choice. Although I'm sure everything in that shop is just as good.

Everything was so cohesive. I definitely recommend giving their shop a look. And it'll probably be difficult to leave without being tempted.

Meet Indigo!

Thursday, September 13, 2012
I've been so excited to share Indigo with the internet! Meet our new baby guinea pig! My mom and I frequent pet stores and everyone does say guinea pigs like company so I've been keeping my eye out for a cute pig for Goose to befriend. We visited our usual spots and they only had boys (we aren't ready for birthin' pigs yet) and our last stop...had a bunch of baby girls. I wasn't going to leave there without a piglet. And I didn't. I called Casey and we picked out this little girl.

{She's the tiniest!}

At first I was a little scared to put Goose with Indi, so slowly introduced them on the floor. For a few days I kept Indigo in a separate cage. But they got along surprisingly well. Look how cute!!

I made two new guinea pig burritos for them, too. Goose loves taking attention with her cute mouth. But little Indi's so so tiny. Her piggy burrito was such a small pattern, it's so cute even when she's not in it.

{I really tried to get this post to be just 5 pictures. But, no.}

She's now living with Goose in the guinea mansion and they seem so happy. They talk CONSTANTLY.

They're definitely what's been making me happiest these past few days.

My Return!

Tuesday, September 11, 2012
{My newest collection: Adventure Time!}

Hi everyone! It's been quite awhile since I updated. The last few weeks have been pretty hectic. I started my junior year in college, started my second consignment deal in southern Indiana, redesigned 909 Cherry's pictures, shop, packaging, blog, Tumblr, etc. I've been busy and decided a little hiatus from the blog would be helpful. But I realized I miss it and don't want large chunks of my life undocumented!

{909 Cherry products are now available at the RomWeber Marketplace in Batesville, IN!}

{I was the first of the "Handmade in Indiana" vendors to show up, so I got my pick of little cubbies.}

{Found this little guy on our way home from Batesville.}

{Of course I didn't take a break from taking pictures of Cutest Goose.}

{Little bits of the new packaging. I'm running low on business cards too so I get to design newbies!}

I've got a really exciting thing to post about later this week, too! Oh! I also bought a new camera. It's definitely the most expensive thing I've purchased completely on my own, but it's been worth it. I got the Canon T3i. I'm already obsessed with it and excited about learning.

I hope everyone's been great (I've been keeping up with most of you). I'll be posting again soon!
