Bow Makeup Case

Sunday, February 26, 2012
Since February brought a huuuuge lull in sales, I figured I'd better get started on new items early. I wanted make-up cases in the shop, but was unimpressed with the last ones I made, or at least the lack of sales they brought. Anyway, I present: bow makeup cases. I'm so imaginative with names.

I have kinks to work out. This is version 1. The middle of the bow drives me insane. Definitely going to fix that.

But I like the handle and the idea of it.

Plus it fits all the makeup I plan on traveling with next month.

I went to Joann's yesterday and found some amazing fabric for version 2. The outside fabric is thinner (version 1 is very stiff and looks odd when full of products). Hopefully I'll work out kinks and find things to improve upon.

Since I'm not doing anything for spring break, I'll get plenty of time to sew and crochet. ALSO: I finally got my dummy iPad in the mail, so expect some iPad cases in the future as well!

Enjoy your Sundays! I'm headed to my parent's later for a turkey dinner.

Thursday, February 23, 2012
{I've been in a funk lately, so my mom and I did a little shopping.}

{And she surpised me with this Alice in Wonderland mug. The inside's red! Like I'm drinking blood.}

{I completed a New Year's resolution at Asakusa in Fort Wayne!}

{And I didn't wimp out. I ate most of this plate.}

Confession: I really wanted my $14.59 back. T'was not a fan. HOWEVER, I plan on trying other sorts before I give up on sushi all together. I'd love to hear suggestions from sushi lovers!

{I finished Catching Fire.}

A lot of people told me the books get better as they go, but I didn't agree. I'm half into Mockingjay (a title I really can't stand) and still love the Hunger Games best. But they're all good, for sure. I've been slow going because my American Literature class has me swamped.

{A funny typo in a local mailer.}

I actually sewed today! I made a new product for the shop. The version I made needs some fixin's, but I really like it. So expect that post tomorrow or Saturday!

Happy Thursday, everyone. Let me know your favorite sushi...bits? What do you call different types of sushi? Variations. Sure. Tell me that.

Bison and Bald Eagles

Monday, February 20, 2012
If it's not been evident on my blog thus far, I'm a fan of animals. I especially like ones with fur on four legs. I've never seen a bison in person (especially not up close). So when my mom told me that in my hometown (Huntington, IN) she found a bunchuh bison, I was pretty excited.

And there were a bunch of bison. I'm going back once the weather's warmer. They were so cool. I really wanted to hug them but my mom had qualms about me even getting out of the car (you bet your ass I did though).

The main purpose of the excursion was for BALD EAGLES! My mom and Becky are huge bird fans and were in a reservoir in Huntington and saw about 8 bald eagles. When I went with my mom we saw about 3. I had never seen one in the wild, just two sick ones in an aviary in Pittsburgh.

I didn't get the greatest of pictures because we only spotted them across the river and I had to find tiny openings between branches (my camera was more interested in focusing on tree branches than giant birds). But it was really awesome. My mom had binoculars, so we were bird nerds for an afternoon.

We also spotted a blue heron. He didn't move for the longest time (perfect for pictures) but was in a horrible spot (branch-wise).

The snow's kind of cool too, I guess.

And I'd like to take this spot to thank my mom for buying me these waterproof boots. I got them a year ago and never wore them until that bison/bald eagle day. They were SO NICE. I'm definitely going to put them to more use in NATURE.

ALSO: I want to brag for one moment. While I don't get to go anywhere during my college's spring break, my mom, Becky and I are going back to the Pittsburgh aviary in March! I have only been to Pittsburgh once, but absolutely loved it. I'm pretty excited. And we never go anywhere without first mapping where all the best shopping spots are, so it's not just bird watching. That would be ludicrous.

-End Brag-

Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to get better pictures of both the bison and the eagles to share.

I hope everyone's enjoying the awesome weather (if you are in fact having good weather). I'm off to try sushi for the first time!

Valentine's Day 2012

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
Casey and I never really do the typical Valentine's shenanigans. I don't own a red body-con dress and we're not much for "fancy." However, I'm not capable of passing a holiday by without cutting colored paper. If it's not making a Christmas countdown, it's this. I cut 36 colored hearts.

And made a garland to go in a doorway in our apartment. I should have been reading Edith Wharton for class, but she's not my favorite. So I chose to make Valentine's garland. Obvious choice.

Anyway I think it adds a nice touch to an otherwise hideous faux-wood door.

And also scares the shit out of me every time I come out of the bedroom. I'm nothing if not consistant.

I hope you got your fair share of chocolate today!

An Attempt to Unplug

Thursday, February 9, 2012
I've been a weird kind of a mess lately. I've always had issues with anxiety, but they really came out in January and into February. I've been trying to find the sources of the anxiety and think it boils down to what I collectively call "work". I spend so much time on my computer. Whether I'm on Etsy, planning blogs, or answering e-mails, it all feels like "working" and 99% of it is unnecessary. Throw in "social networking", which I'm no big fan of, and I feel like I'm wasting so much time on things I've added to my "to-do" list just to have something to fill the list up.

Anyway, I'm going to be making some changes both for my anxiety and because in no way can I justify all the time I spend with my Macbook. I want to read and walk and be able to "be" without noise and typing and communicating constantly. I think it's pretty depressing how hard it was for me to just sit and think the other day. I was on the couch without a tv, computer, phone or anything else and I just got that little voice in the back of my head telling me to "work" or "do something beneficial". I think it's been tiring me out and making me nervous.

I'm pretty sick of feeling "obligated" to have all this junk in my life. Facebook and Twitter are pretty pointless for me. I'm a reserved person. I don't want my thoughts plastered all over the internet, so I rarely use them. They sit there and give me anxiety about how many "followers" or "friends" I have. My blog serves as a display of self worth as I worry about how many "followers" or comments" I get. I've become so obsessed with these numbers, that I don't enjoy what I'm doing anymore. I look at Etsy sales and try to focus on how to get that number to go up rather than enjoying the crocheting and sewing I used to do purely for fun.

So this is my plan: I'm going to rid myself of the unnecessary social networking (making sure I get some cell phone numbers of those I don't actually want to lose touch with), I'm going to hide all the "followers" numbers and "hit counts" and things that serve no real purpose other than bragging rights. I'm going to spend much less time around my computer.  I still want to have seamless communication with Etsy buyers, but really don't need all the extra time spent doing other things. I want to read a lot more. I want to go home and take my dogs for walks. I want to go out in the world and be able to do things by myself without anxiety constantly coaxing me to just "go home and watch Hulu".

This should have been a resolution from the start of 2012.

What can be expected on the 909 Cherry blog: less frequent posts, but more quality posts - truly updating on things I want to be able to look back on and important information for the shop.

I really need to train my mind to care more about what I'm doing/enjoying than the response it's getting from others. That's something I think growing up with "the internet" has really messed up for me. I care about "likes" and "comments" and "followers" and not writing or making things. I'm going to stop making excuses for not going out. I'm going to stop spending 90% of my waking time at home attached to the living room because that's where my computer is. It's okay not to be constantly watching videos. It's okay not to listen to music every waking minute. And it's definitely okay not to make extra "work" for myself especially due to the anxiety that comes with others' opinions of it.

Today I'm going to loosen myself from the internet.

-Insert some dramatic song. Like Indiana Jones theme music or something.-

Casey's Birthday!

Monday, February 6, 2012
My boyfriend Casey turned 24 today. When I got home from school I brought us Subway and he opened his presents. One of which he wasn't expecting at all.

Happy birthday, Casense! I love you and all that mucky junk.

OPI - My Private Jet

Thursday, February 2, 2012
OPI - My Private Jet (2 coats)

Alright, alright. I'm going to start my nail polish list over. I've recently developed a new obsession for pictures being in focus. I realized a lot of my old nail pictures are just gross. As I mentioned yesterday, I know this is insane, but I'm focusing more on GOOD pictures than I was. So my nail list starts with My Private Jet.

And the purple in the backgrounds of the pictures is the lavender painted flip side of the aqua plywood. I love how it looks, too. The grain isn't as visible, but the color is perfect.

Anyway, enough attention paid to my insanity. Back to homework.

Aqua Wood Grain

Wednesday, February 1, 2012
If you've been following my blog or shop for any amount of time at all, you'll know I like my change. I'm also kind of a perfectionist. I like my Etsy pictures to have the same backgrounds and look nice all together and have the same lighting and fleh fleh. Well my last grouping of pictures wasn't cutting it. I went to MENARDS (a hardware/lumber) store. BY MYSELF. And I bought some plywood and spray paint and made a new background for the shop and blog. One side is this aqua color and the other is a lavender, which you'll see tomorrow (there's going to be another slight change that you might label me crazy for).

I really like how the shop looks now. Though the backgrounds aren't clones of each other, they are close enough to satisfy me. For now.

I even modeled (kind of) for the headbands. I desperately needed a picture of them on a human form, and wasn't about to use Casey, so I just DID IT. You know I'm desperate when I'm willing to put a picture of myself on the internet.

I also finally listed the Harry Potter-inspired iPhone 4 cases. I've had the iPod Touch ones up for ages, but had never found the time to make and list the iPhone 4 ones. Thus far, those are the only new additions, but I have plans!

Shop here and keep your fingers crossed for me. I have to write a paper for one stickler (in all aspects) of a professor.

Happy Wednesday!
