Winter Crochets at 909

Wednesday, November 30, 2011
My beautiful friends Kristin (pictured above) and Katie (see her in the third picture) agreed to model some of my crochets last week. We spent the night in downtown Fort Wayne and I got some pretty awesome pictures.

The scarves in the shop are infinity scarves. They wrap around your neck twice and are amazing if I'm allowed to say so. My favorite is the purple and green one pictured above.

Katie wore it well, too!

I also finally listed the bow headwraps! Since they were such a hit at the craft show, I made a bunch and added 10 new ones to the "winter crochets" section of 909 Cherry this afternoon.

Click here to shop! The scarves run for $30 and the headwraps are just $9! PLUS use the code NOVHOLIDAY today only to get 20% off!

OPI - Bling Dynasty (3 coats)

Gotta love those clever OPI names. This color is a bit weird looking next to my pale skin, but I still love it. It was a gift from Casey last Christmas.

It's sleeting and gross out today, so I plan on burrowing in the apartment and crocheting things for Christmas presents. And probably re-painting my nails... HOWEVA. For once the color I'm posting about it still currently on my nails.

Hope your feet aren't frozen solid where you are!

Thanksgiving at the Renz's

Monday, November 28, 2011
So this is what a turkey looks like. I didn't include the picture of the gizzards to spare my readers. Once this guy was spiced and browned it looked pretty good though.

I even got Becky to be excited about the raw one! We typically eat around four, so by this time we were all pretty hungry (though I was filled up on Becky's scones, which are about my favorite thing to eat during the holidays).

We didn't eat at the table this year, which was a break from tradition. But we all ate together and watched various Thanksgiving television programs.

As usual Ben posed for weird pictures. We were laughing at his hood...which is horribly pointy, so he never gets to wear it in public. That doesn't mean we can't take pictures in the house.

Hope everyone's Thanksgivings were delicious. TWO MORE WEEKS OF SCHOOL!

White Chocolate Peppermint Brownies

Wednesday, November 23, 2011
I finally got the materials together to blog about the brownies! I've made two batches now so I've worked out the kinks and eaten my fair share. I've included the recipe in the post so others can try it too.

Full disclosure: I am not a good recipe maker. My mom cursed me. We aren't the best at coming up with recipes on our own, but I'm learning to FOLLOW them successfully. No deviations, no problem. Maybe one day I'll learn to tweak and make my own things. Click here if you want to see the recipe close up.

I hesitated to include this picture because it shows that I'm not always perfectly clean and organized. I make giant messes while working - both in the kitchen and with my shop. But you can rest assured it was cleaned up quickly after.

The brownies themselves came out amazing. The first batch was a bit too gooey, but I think I fixed that in the next batch (which is currently waiting in the kitchen for Casey to take to his mom's tomorrow).

I managed to melt the white chocolate (I used chips instead of chopped chunks) evenly. This recipe seemed soooo simple. But the end product looks so damn fancy.

A tip: there has to be a perfect middle time to put on the peppermint chips...the first time I put them on too soon and they melted into the chocolate (I didn't use actual peppermint hard candy like the recipe called for - I found soft Andes peppermint chunks that looked easier). This time I put them on too late and just roll around on top. I'm too scared to warm it up because the peppermint chocolate chips will melt too...so yeah. Find that middle ground and you're good.

I've got on more batch of these to make for the Renz Thanksgiving tomorrow and then I have to find a recipe for some Christmas baking. Definitely let me know if you try this recipe!

And have an amazing Thanksgiving!

Westfield Craft Show

Monday, November 21, 2011
This is not a depressing post! I fully expected this to be an upbeat but "meh" review of the Westfield craft show. Considering my past 2 shows were awful, I had little expectation. HOWEVER. This was pretty awesome. Since I had an abundance of compliments and not so much money from the last show, my mom and I decided to log the compliments so I had something to walk away with. As the show went on I neglected that log and was making real sales! I sold at least one of everything I brought and then some. I got the price of the booth back and more. Phew. I'm not a craft show failure.

I decided I needed something new for this one (and with only a week between shows it had to be simple). I made some headbands which I featured in my previous post. They were a hit! Not only was a headband my first sale, I sold 4 more!

I changed up my set a bit and am happier with it than I was the last one. I also lowered my prices by a little.

Overall I'm very pleased. I don't know if I'll return next year because the booths are going to cost considerably more... but it's good to know I can succeed in a craft show setting.

And now I have a stack of cash to buy yarn with. I have some projects to tackle before Christmas.

I hope everyone's weekends went as well as mine (though weren't as hectic). This week I'll have posts about the brownies I mentioned, one of my favorite nail polishes, the Renz family Thanksgiving and possibly some shots of the Anthony Wayne statue in downtown Fort Wayne. Whatever doesn't get posted this week will definitely be coming soon.

Also for all you Tumblr-havers: Designers of Tumblr (to which I owe so much), have given me the honor of hosting the first of their new slew of giveaways. Click here to participate!

Friday Five #24

Friday, November 18, 2011

{Downtown Fort Wayne.}

I had an art assignment that required me to visit downtown to get some pictures of the Anthony Wayne statue (I'll post about it next week). Casey accompanied me and I got a few images of my favorite things. The court house is one of those things.

{My freshly painted nails.}

{I'm really loving American Horror Story!}

{Head wraps I've been working on for winter.}

My mom and I went on a long dog walk yesterday (in 40 degree weather) and I wore one. I endorse my own s&^#.

{I GET TO BAKE WITH THESE THINGS TODAY!}

Tonight Casey and I are going to a Thanksgiving party with a bunch of friends. I'm making an amazing sounding dessert. I'll also post about that next week. I hope they turn out.

Happy weekend! One more day of classes for me before Thanksgiving. And one more craft show. Wish me double luck. I hope this one is a success.

Wishful thinking, Kirsten.

Nails of the Moment Vol. 26

OPI - Warm and Fozzie (3 coats)

I saw the Muppets collection and chose two colors that I HADTA have. Meet the grey area. Technically I'm not allowed to buy nail polish until I've worn and posted about all my existing colors... Well, my mom got this for me and it's not like I was going to throw it away. (If you're a nail polish freak and want to know what the other color is, it's Designer De Better!)

I'm not a muppet fan, so I don't know if I'll see the movie. However, Casey has a man crush on Jason Segal, so maybe I'll get dragged there.

Happy ALMOST weekend!

What's the antonym for "procrastinate"?

Wednesday, November 16, 2011
I was and continue to be that annoying kid who's never had issues with procrastination. I always got homework assignments and special projects done way early. Yeah yeah, I know, you hate me. I'm a loser nerd. But now that I'm 20 and in college it comes in handy. With juggling classes, my shop, taking care of an apartment and now Christmas...I love my anti-procrastination. My mom and I went to Darlington Farms, which in Fort Wayne is an outlet Christmas shopping warehouse. We go there for wrapping paper.

I found two perfect rolls. Each for only $1.59! I got a holiday-neutral snowflake one for Etsy sales during the holidays and (dare I say "cute") Santa paper for family and friends.

I forgot to get tags though, so I figured...I have loads of matte paper and a circle cutter. I made them myself. I channeled my inner Martha Stewart.

The final products came out a lot like this. I've purchased most of the major gifts I'm giving people this year. Unfortunately I have yet to make any of the handmade things. I'm waiting on color preference and some extra cash to buy new yarn.

I'm really excited for what's under these wrappings. I'm definitely a sucker for Christmas. Come Thanksgiving (WHICH IS NEXT WEEK) I'll have the tree up in the apartment and be waking up to and constantly playing Christmas music. I'm one of those annoying people. This is just a post all about how I'm annoying.

Any other anti-procrastinators out there? Anyone?

Nails of the Moment Vol. 25

OPI - Stranger Tides (2 coats)

I loved every color in the Pirates of the Caribbean collection. This is a polish my mom calls "putty", which makes me think of the putties from the Power Rangers. Even though those are grey. This kind of makes my nails look diseased. I'm going to admit that I definitely hid them during one of my classes. Like a child. This color is an acquired taste, but nothing...nothing will ever be as bad as China Glaze's Trendsetter. Such an ironic name. 'Cause if I saw you wearing this color I wouldn't think you were a trendsetter one bit. I'd think you got some vomit on your fingernails there...

Okay. Last week before Thanksgiving. I'm reading Kafka's The Metamorphosis, approaching a test on weathering and erosion, growing tired of "social injustice" and about to pick all my hairs off listening to my should-be-second-grade-teacher-not-because-she's-not-smart-but-she-has-the-most-babyish-condescending-voice-I've-heard-in-life professor of art.

I'm only enjoying Kafka.

Nothing like a Tuesday morning nail post for some mind purging.

Holiday Craft Fair Round 2 : Pendleton

Pardon the not-so-great pictures. The lighting in the area was dimmed and I get antsy taking pictures in public. I'm a hermit crab. Alright. I'm not one for lying or candy coating things. I really thought this year's craft shows would go loads better than the Northrop flop last holiday season. I felt like my products had improved a lot and was expecting a success.

Needless to say it didn't happen. I did get a boatload of compliments. Watching people see the Square Bears, stop, smile and say "these are so cute" was my main source of payment. I did sell things, but not too much. Bonus? I don't really have to make new things for the Westfield craft show this weekend.

I'm much prouder of this set-up than I was of the Local Color one last year. The wrinkly sheet was the only thing that annoyed me.

I do want to tell a story about this little girl. After my mom left and Casey came, we were sitting and the crowd was dying down. This little girl with messy hair and glasses comes up and looks at the Square Bears. She said "what are these?" and I explained and she said, "they look like little dogs". She was so sweet and exuberant. She talked with us a little then said "well...see you around." I don't know why but that was the highlight of the show. She was so cute. "See you around." Who says that?

So Casey and I drove home and played carride games and it was enjoyable all-in-all. I think I still need to search for the right craft fair. This one was full of candles and things geared told older people. While I got a ton of positive feedback, I still enter these things to make money. I got the table price back, but not a lot more. Enough for some Taco Bell, no doubt.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes. Round 3 is this Saturday. I'm going in with little expectation, but we'll see!

Happy Monday. I have a nerve-racking thing to do today which I can hopefully share with you all soon!

Friday Five #23

Friday, November 11, 2011

{My obsessive zipper chart. These are the things I do in my spare time.}

{My favorite part of making zipper cases is choosing the colors combinations.}

{Halloween candy is on sale!}

{I needed to use up some baby zippers, so I made these little coin pouches for the craft show.}

{I'm currently reading Shutter Island. I definitely recommend.}

Tomorrow is the day! I'm getting up before the sun and going to Pendleton, Indiana. I'll be back Monday with an update!

Happy weekend!

Ulta - Smoke Screen (2 coats)

The first snow happened in Indiana today! You can't really tell in this pictures, but it's snowing! And I'm officially one of five people in the area who is happy.

I'm a million percent overwhelmed with the craft show, school and life in general, so sorry for the short post, but nail posts always are.

Happy ALMOST weekend!
