Ulta - Little Black Dress (2 coats)

Instant favorite. I'm going to divulge a little secret here. Back in middle school (when I attended a Catholic school) we weren't permitted to wear nail polish at all. During Friday night football games I rebelled and wore black nail polish (which I bought from Hot Topic). For those of you who went to a parochial school, you might know how rebellious this was (both the use of black nail polish and the shopping at Hot Topic). I was so cool I could have just died. At that high school football game. Needless to say this impregnated the label "gothic" deep in my seventh grade self. It's very hard to get rid of these labels in a 20-person 7th grade class. I didn't want and couldn't stand this title.

But after that whole bout with rebellion I never wore black nail polish for fear of being called "gothic". I figured with as many cardigans and ankle boots that I own now, I've shed that label and could safely wear this sparkly black.

My older brother Ben called me "gothic" today.

Typical.

I thought this was as Halloween as my nails could get. I'm not much for nail art and don't have any true orange polish, so this will have to do. Later today I'm going to my parents house for a baby get-together (not a get-together of babies, but a small group of people getting together, but not in a "getting together ;]" way, but a platonically hanging out and eating candy way) and passing out candy. Maybe it'll be picture-worthy and I can post about it tomorrow.

Happy Halloween everyone! Gorge yourself on candy and feel no shame.

Friday Five (Vol. 21)

Friday, October 28, 2011
I'm not one for searching through Etsy endlessly. But occasionally I look at the front page treasuries and find jewels. OR find an awesome handicrafter on a blog and stalk their shop. The following are five Etsy jewels I'd love to have.

{THE BEST. A whale mobile by ERGOgoods.}

{I've admired the LaTouchables shop for ages. My first "favorited" shop on Etsy.}

{I've wanted to buy this print by Berkley Illustrations for my dad. Maybe this x-mas.}

{This awesome clock by ArtisEverything.}

{These vintage sunglasses from THAYEReyewear. Oh that I may stumble upon a similar pair in an antique store.}

What are your favorite Etsy finds? Better yet, what are your favorite Etsy shops? I'll do a future FF on that subject. I have a few in mind.

Super happy weekend. I need a break from reading and writing!

New Stuff

Thursday, October 27, 2011

{New pencil cases.}

{My new business cards! Simple yet effective.}

I've had a lot of tests this week and am scrambling not to fall behind. I have, however, been working on some limited edition Square Bears and a new set of iPod cases. The process is slow, but I'm happy with what I've done.

I hope everyone has a good close to their weeks and I'll be back with a Friday Five of some sort tomorrow!

My Miniature Brother is 16

Tuesday, October 25, 2011
This past Sunday my family and I celebrated my little brother's sixteenth birthday. It's so bizarre to me that the annoying kid I used to hold and dress and bathe is now old enough to drive. Is that creepy? It's creepy. He has a beard.

My gift is the white box. I really should have gotten pictures of the card. I handmade it and was pretty proud. His main gift from my parents was a $100 pair of shoes. We're so different. I may have over 20 pairs of shoes, but none was more expensive than $50. Alex has a taste for the finer things in life I guess.

I love that I got his immediate reaction to my dad's card. He wrote a rap! And it was hilarious because he rapped it..in the restaurant. You can see the hand gesture he used in the bottom left corner. I got a video but don't think my dad wants it out on the internet. Let's just say my dad is a white man who enjoys Neil Young, biking, and documentaries.

After lunch we got ice cream at the mall where the infamous "angry mom" ad stands. Alex had never noticed it so I showed him and he insisted I get a picture of him next to it. He said "I can be the happy dad".

Happy birthday Alexander.

I'm not typically a fan of blues, but this one is an exception. Casey bought it for me two Christmases ago.

A Pun Regarding Gameboys

Thursday, October 20, 2011
One of my favorite things to make for the shop are the Gameboy-inspired iPod Touch cases. Coincidentally and fortunately they're pretty popular too! So I decided (as I've done with a lot of other stuff) that I'd revamp them.

I updated the shop with 10 new cases. I used new yarn and rounded corners and cleaned things up. I still used the red beads. Those are too perfect to replace. They look as if they're lit up in the light. Such a good Hobby Lobby find.

I've also been working on making my products have more original names, so instead of simple color titles, I tried to get a little creative. Though I kept my anal-retentive habits and limited myself to one word and stuck to fruits and flowers and natural things. And...radioactive. Because "lime" is something I've used 100 times. Also "radioactive lime" is two words and thus unacceptable.

My favorite is the guava one. Which is your favorite?

Bananer Bread

Wednesday, October 19, 2011
I made a few banana breads over the summer, but banana bread is for the fall - at least in my opinion. I'm going to confess that I'm not much of a recipe creator. I find all my recipes online. I'm going to make another confession and say I lost the recipe I used for this batch. I rarely use the same recipe twice. I find it fun to find new ones and try new things and haven't made a banana bread that was PERFECT. Maybe when I do I'll start a recipe book.

I absolutely love the images from the Ikea cookbook. Click here and die with organizational pleasure. That is art. I'd hang those images in my apartment. So I like to lay out my ingredients kind of like that for fun. Of course mine aren't as cool.

I should have taken the bread out about 5 minutes sooner. I like mine a little mushy and moist (stop cringing, it's just a word).

But after a few days it's gone, so it must have been pretty good. It needed pumpkin spice, which we don't own. Casey has a vast collection of cooking spices but we're low on baking spices. Just cinnamon mostly.

Definitely going to start a "baking" tag.

OPI - Can You Tapas This? (3 coats)

Going through my nail polish collection for the garage sale (yes, I'm selling more nail polish), I realized I have a very small amount of dark colors. With fall here and all I'm tired of the bright purples and pastel colors, so I wanted a dark color and this was as dark as I found.

Needless to say my Christmas list includes a little Black Onyx and My Private Jet.

Stoller's Antique Mall

Monday, October 17, 2011
My mom and I love antiquing and thrifting, and while most of the fun comes from traveling to smaller Indiana cities, Stoller's is a local antique mall that suits our addiction when gas prices are higher or we're low on time.

Some of my favorite things to look at/for are vintage beauty products/tools/vanity tables. While I'd never spend money on buying them, I'm a fan of all the gold and fancy glass shampoo bottles. And hand mirrors. So many hand mirrors.

I also love antique kitchen stuff. My favorite are the old ovens. I would really just like to bake some banana bread in this oven.

We save the upstairs for last. The first time my mom took me here I was intimidated. Look at that hallway. There are rooms upon rooms upon rooms of furniture, creepy dolls and home decor. While I could never afford most of the furniture (and rarely really want anything), it's entertaining to wonder how some of these pieces ever looked good in anyone's house.

I can only stay so long because it's absolutely PACKED full of stuff. It's okay watching Hoarders because I can't rub up against or smell those houses...but BEING THERE is so much harder. To top it all off, the owners use little lighting or heating/air conditioning upstairs, so it's a bit creepy and uncomfortable - especially when you accidentally bound into a room full of dolls. Something else that keeps me on my toes (almost literally) is the old old building. When the wind blows, you blow. My mom says I'm imagining it, but I feel as if the floor could go at any time. Maybe it's because I'm thinking about the sheer weight of all the furniture. Needless to say I'm always a room or two ahead of my mom.

Despite the toy rooms being full of dolls (which I always seem to picture getting up and walking over to me), I love the dollhouses. The tin ones especially (my pictures of those were just awful).

I'm glad I'm getting less babyish about taking pictures in public. I like sharing places I love with the internet.

Happy Monday. And if not a "happy" Monday, at least a neutral one.

-edit-
Definitely didn't realize this building has a 909 address. It's fate!

Friday Five (Vol. 20) - Jezzebelle

Friday, October 14, 2011

{Regal after a fur trim.}

{Reminiscent of a werewolf. Also, one of few "gross Mowgli-esque" shots I have of her.}

{This image defines Jezzebelle's personality.}

{Jezzebelle panting...because she's afraid of firework bangs.}

{We'll end with a genuinely cute one.}

What kind of a blog would this be if I had a Mowgli Friday Five and not a Jezzebelle one? Granted my vault of Jezzebelle pictures isn't as extensive or impressive as my Mowgli one. Granted Jezzebelle is black and sassy (if she were an Office character, she'd be Stanley Hudson) and hates sitting still. Granted she rarely does embarrassing things like her brainless counterpart. But sometimes...when she's not refusing to learn to shake; or pretending to be deaf so she doesn't have to come; or laying down while you were petting her so you can no longer reach her, but still looking up at you like "really...you stopped petting me?"; or licking things that ought not to be licked, she can be kind of awesome.

Here's to you Jezzebelle. I yelled at you yesterday for not listening to me. And as usual I felt immensely guilty. Maybe Ben will show you this post so you know I love you.

Happy weekend!

Poe Cemetery

Tuesday, October 11, 2011
This past weekend I went to my parent's and my mom and I wanted to get out of the house since the weather was beautiful. The leaves had started changing and the temperature had been in the 70s and 80s. We got the dogs and some frozen Cokes and drove to Poe, Indiana.

Jezzbelle loves the car.

Mowgli does not.

This creepy little schoolhouse is next to the cemetery. It was our original destination. When I went country driving a few days ago I didn't stop here because I was a baby and there were people in view.

And next to the schoolhouse is Poe cemetery, a tiny cemetery with century old gravestones and bugs.

The walnut tree wanted to kill us. It was dead silent in the cemetery except for locusts, which Hoosiers can pretty well tune out. Every once in awhile we'd hear a loud thump and look around. Walnuts were falling from this tree and could have easily knocked us out.

I'm not a fan of bugs. At all. This thing is nasty. Just so you know.

Most of the gravestones had indistinguishable writing due to weathering and age, but the ones that did were interesting to read.

My mom and I decided we're going to come back after the first frost when it's bug free and bring paper for etchings. Like cool kids.

New Hogwarts Cases

Monday, October 10, 2011
I wanted to make more of the Harry Potter inspired cases because of how popular they were and how much I love the series and stories behind each house. Since the name change, however, I wanted everything to seem new and exciting, so I changed it up a bit. Each crest is unique and I think they all look fresher and cleaner.

I love them! And the way I'm making them now is not only easier for me, but more sturdy on the case itself.

Of course the Gryffindor is my favorite, but I think they all turned out well. I've got a lot more updated cases in the works! Click here to shop the new Hogwarts cases and check out sales!

Which house are you?

Friday Five (Vol. 19)

Friday, October 7, 2011

Midwestern un-appreciators be damned.
Happy fall!
