Productivity on a Tuesday

Tuesday, May 31, 2011
Waking up after 11 with a tremendous amount of crust in my eyes (I realize "crust" is maybe one of the most disgusting words and certainly not a word one ought to use in the opening sentence of a blog post, but that's the reality of it) I didn't think I'd be a very productive person today. Obviously by the title of the post we can conclude that I thought wrong.

I was able to photograph (THANK YOU, SUN), list, make, photograph, list, make...and so on practically all day - with a break for a post office trip. I even finished the keychain I'd been talking about on Tumblr.

I had purchased pliers and wire earlier this month with the hopes of turning my little ball birds into keychains and finally got the burst of energy to make jump rings and put this guy together. I actually really loved the process, so expect more of these in the shop relatively soon!

As if I needed a new collection of crafting equipment.

And as far as my bag goes, it's been thrown by the wayside for awhile. I haven't forgotten about it, but I've been anxious to master new parts like making an adjustable strap and finally sewing it all together. So hopefully that'll be completed soon as well.

HOWEVER a halt approaches. I turn 20 on Friday so Thursday-Sunday I've got various birthday bashes planned and will probably not be updating this during that time. I do have a Project Knit planned for tomorrow and maybe maybe maybe a Friday Five that I can queue. Basically I'm just really saddened at turning 20. I'll miss my "I'm a teenager" excuse. But the good news is that when June rolls around I get to use the "it's my birthday" excuse for everything. Prepare your massaging skills, Casey Cope. <-- I know this won't work, though.

Enough ranting.

I hope everyone has a good dinner tonight. This is a strange thing to say, but I'm really hungry.

And a quick shout out to two people who inspired me to write this post: fluffing and thanksatan on Tumblr left me awesome messages telling me they read this blog (after I'd posted a whiney text about lack of motivation to write on here). So thank you so much, guys!

Project Knit (Week 2)

Wednesday, May 25, 2011
This is what I've got. Pathetic as predicted. I swear I did 14 rows... I guess knitting isn't as easily counted as crochet? Or I'm doing something horribly wrong? I remember my first piece of crochet was SO TIGHTLY crocheted that it looked minuscule, so maybe that's what this is. But I did it, and that's all that matters. I dropped a few stitches and cursed a few times, but all-in-all I got a little faster.

Not much else to say yet. Week 2 starts today!

Lots of Updates!

Sunday, May 22, 2011
Last night I had a swollen eye, watched Burlesque and made a crochet garland. <- AMAZING opening sentence. I actually enjoyed the movie...secretly. Though secret doesn't apply when you blog about it. But I made this to go on my bedroom door and am happy with how it turned out. I do, however, need to find a way to starch it to make it stiffer. It folds all over itself.

Plus I finally finished one of the ball birds I started months and months ago. I have three more to do, but like this guy a lot.

I completed my first iPhone 4 case. I decided to go with my top-selling cases first. Next I'll make some Gameboys and possibly the Harry Potters. I'm really having too much fun with this dummy phone. I'm delighted by the fact I can actually press the buttons. And that is a sad thing.

I also relisted a good chunk of my zipper cases on my Etsy today. I discounted them and hope to get rid of a lot of them. They're piling up in my inventory drawers.

And finally I got pictures of my newest collection of cupcake cases! Lemon cream, confetti, chocolate, blueberry muffin, red velvet and birthday. I got really hungry while making these.

And I decided to make a bunch of solid colored cases for people to buy for a discounted price. They're available in any color under the sun and cost only $9.

Friday Five (Vol. 2)

Friday, May 20, 2011
The past few weeks I've been noticing that we're getting pretty birds this year! Living in Indiana, it's not really a big deal to see a cardinal or finch, but when I see brightly colored birds I always make sure the person I'm with sees them too, even if they have no interest. While I didn't get any pictures of cardinals (my favorite), I got a few decent shots of some of my favorite backyard birds.

1. This little guy I watched this morning while I was out with the dogs. He sat there staring at me for awhile so I figured he deserved a spot in my Friday Five. He could have probably fit in the palm of my hand.

2. This was truly amazing. On Wednesday night my mom called me outside and said there were baby robins that seemed sick or something. This bird was literally a foot away from me at one point. She didn't move at all. I was guessing she didn't know how to fly yet, but I have no idea. We found broken robin's eggs in the grass. Anyway, I think it's the cutest bird ever.

3. A few minutes later my mom found her brother. He was a scary version... Darkly colored and had a mean mean face, but he was still cute. Again, he didn't move when we got close. They were both gone when I got back from being out though, so I hope they're healthy.

4. This one. Technically I saw him last week, but I still like this picture.

5. I see this bird almost everyday. It has a nest in our bluebird house. I see it when I'm making lunch and I've gotten a few good images of him (I'm guessing it's a him because it's pretty and girl birds are typically bleh).

I feel weird making a blog post about bird watching. I feel like I'm 127 years old. I crochet and watch birds. What a life.

Enjoy your weekends! Looks like midwest weather is going to be friendly!

Project Knit (Week 1)

Thursday, May 19, 2011
I've been battling with knitting for a long time now. I've been crocheting since sophomore year in high school and (sorry crochet) have always thought knitting looked cleaner and faster and have heard it uses less yarn. I have tried and failed and given up on knitting maybe two dozen times and now that I'm making myself do all these things (start a blog, make a better variety of Etsy products, and make my own beauty products) I figured, why not make myself learn to knit? So Project Knit was born. Each week (probably on Wednesdays) I'll post a picture of my knitting. I've "cast on" 30 stitches to my favorite pair of needles. Each day I'm going to do two lines of knitting. So each weekly installment of Project Knit will have 14 new rows and HOPEFULLY show progress.

I thought having to post an image on the internet would motivate me. So here is the first row. Pretty...whatever. I always give up around row 5-6 because I drop stitches or it just looks like bunk. I'm not sure how long I'll be doing this, but one step at a time for now.

I'll be posting a new Friday Five tomorrow! This week is going so fast.

Suddenly Motivated

Wednesday, May 18, 2011
Two days ago I posted an image of this wire basket on my Tumblr. I made a goal for myself to fill this sucker up with new cases by the end of the week. I've made a bit of progress, but recent events have made me kind of hesitant to make many more iPod Touch cases considering I have 105,607,365,476,247,835 in the shop and they aren't really selling as quickly as they did near Christmas. But I'm still adding to it and trying to stay motivated with my tried and true products.

As for these turds: I've also been practicing amigurumi crochet. I've always been attracted to how those little things look, got a couple books for Christmas, and have tried my own patterns and quickly given up due to frustration. But today I've decided I'm not stopping 'til I produce a little amigurumi teddy bear. These are his little turd arms. But I will most definitely post a picture of the finished product, no matter how homely he looks.

I stayed up until 5 a.m. this morning drawing up bag patterns and making shopping lists for things I'll need to make purses, totes, etc. I'm really excited for the things I've come up with while simultaneously hesitant to go shopping considering I've spent WAY too much in May already. But you have to spend money to make money.

I also got this new desk chair! While this has next to nothing to do with handmaking (besides the fact that I typically crochet in it now), I'm really excited to finally have a chair with a back and arms instead of a stool that was ruining my back and thus my life.

Other than that I've been seeing a lot of friends lately, which has been wonderful. I've been staying out late and feeling less like a hermit than I've felt in a long time. So I'm keeping my head up after the big jobless upset and trying to expand my shop is really exciting to me. So there's that. I'm also starting a new project which I'll post about later and will have it's own weekly post to motivate me. Mysterious.

Hooray hump day. (I've forever hated that phrase... it just doesn't sound anything like what it means.)

Friday Five (Vol. 1)

Friday, May 13, 2011
Since my posts have been in no way organized, I decided to slowly incorporate scheduled posts rather than immediately outline my week with them. Thus the Friday Five is born. I'm giving myself no real rules when it comes to Friday Five. They can be really anything I want. This week they'll just be five things that got me through the week and made me happy.

I had a pretty rough week. I found out I didn't get the job I wanted, and therefore will not be moving out relatively soon. So that was a downer. Plus it's getting hot and I'm no fan of summer or heat, so I've just been throwing myself a pity party. But there were bright spots, and I think I'm officially out of the dumps!

1. My "nail drawer": I've been obsessed with buying white Steralite drawers to organize my stuff. I got two huge ones to put my LC stuff in and these tiny ones for my make-up and nail stuff. This drawer opens daily and I just love how it looks. Which is probably just really boring to normal people. But as someone who finds endless joy in painting my nails...it fits.

2. Super surprisingly - Orly's Rage: This color has been on my nails all week and I think it might be my all-time favorite color. Rose gold. Hasn't chipped. Simple enough.

3. Mowgli: Again, so surprising. I gave both dogs baths earlier this week. And this demon dog gave me hell. After I got all the soap lathered up she decided to shake...getting soap ALL OVER me. THEN as soon as I rinsed her completely she runs off and literally slides in mud. She dug her nails in the mud and dragged her belly through. Needless to say I had to start over and then watch her like a hawk. She's literally the devil's spawn sometimes. But then she sits in her windowsill seat and blends into the wood and looks so innocent.

4. I MADE SOMETHING: Granted it was a requested Droid case, but I started and finished something nonetheless. After I made this last night I was on a roll and started a whole new collection of cases, which I'm excited to post about when they're complete!

5. My new yarn set-up: I organized! This is what I do when I'm stressed. The top yarn shelf is neutrals and darker colors. The middle (my favorite) is full of my favorite skeins and colors and the bottom shelf is all my yarn balls and Sugar and Cream yarns in an antique wire basket (thanks mom).

So those were the things that kept me sane this week. I'm glad it's the weekend because now I can just be lazy and disgusting with Casey.

Happy weekend everyone!

MAH! But a quick PS: I'm thinking of getting a booth at the Johnny Appleseed festival for 2012! To locals, you know how many people that event attracts. Booths are really pricey and I've have to make festival appropriate crafts, but I'm really excited. I think it's been a secret dream of mine since I was little to be a seller there... so that's really exciting news.

NOW have a good weekend.

7 Minutes or 9 Dollars?

Monday, May 9, 2011
Lately I've been into scrubs. Exfoliating my hands, lips, elbows, blah, blah. I've also decided that the scrubs I've been buying are a huge waste of money considering they are mostly water and sugar and fragrance. Feeling a little adventurous, I tried my hand at making my own edible lip scrub. I looked up some simple recipes, but in the end just decided to throw stuff in a bowl and figure it out myself.

Literally 7 minutes passed from finding and emptying a jar of (disgustingly Vaseline-y) hand scrub to pouring this concoction in it. The lip scrub sold on Lush's website is nearly $9 and lip scrubs on Etsy and in stores aren't much cheaper. I think 7 minutes of my time was a decent tradeoff. Especially since I've put myself on a 20 Pan (use up 20 beauty/make-up/shower products before buying any frivolous products).

I made it raspberry flavored and put some coloring in it. The coloring stained my lips a tiny tiny bit but I think that's an added bonus. Plus it just tastes like raspberry sugar... so it's okay if it gets in your mouth. Or you purposely put it there.

I'm definitely contemplating expanding my recipe book with more handmade beauty products. And hey, maybe I could start selling those!

Anyway. That's was my "new thing" for the day yesterday. Maybe I'll make more and do a recipe post.

Happy Tuesday!

Crochetin'

I've gotten a good deal of crocheting done already. I made this requested Kindle case. It's inspired by the Pokemon called Sandile. I love getting return customers and the girl who requested this is my favorite to get requests from. She always wants such cute things. I really enjoyed working on this.

Then I decided to make myself another iPod Touch case last night and tried a new sort of pattern. I love how this lavender one turned out. And the buttons are awesome. I got those in a huge mason jar at an antique store in Cincinnati last summer. The way the case looked made me think of a cool idea for a new line of cases for the shop. And I'll probably whip up a few of these in different colors to try to sell as well.
Is it sad that I'm considering buying a broken iPhone so I can start making iPhone cases? I have this obsession with needing to picture the case with the actual device and don't have an iPhone... I want to expand what I provide though. Ebay browsing begins today.

And the last thing I've been working on are crochet zipper cases. They are (pardon) a total bitch to make. At least with the pattern I made they are. I'm going to practice more because I think it's something that would be cute to do, but as of right now they are more labor than what they're probably worth.

On an unrelated note I made nearly $100 at our garage sale on Saturday! I sold EVERY SINGLE nail polish I put out (which was nearly half my collection). Some lady came by in the last minute and bought the remaining 27 polishes for $20, which was awesome and simultaneously heartbreaking. So I'm definitely happy with the garage sale results. I had a bunch of kids going nuts over some of the cases I put out. It seems little kids are the ones who always make me feel best. One girl GASPED and said she thought the cases were really cool.

Other than that I've been pretty lazily enjoying my bits of freedom and anxiously awaiting a call from a potential employer.

Expect some new posts and products this week!

Hope everyone's winding down from this semester and getting some down time!

Etsy Makeover and New Listings

Thursday, May 5, 2011
I finally got the time to do a a much-needed facelift to my shop. I gave it a much simpler and cohesive banner/pictures/blah/blah. I'm really happy with how it looks and satisfied that I tackled it all in a day.

I've also got the entire collection of the video game iPod Touch cases put up. (Teal and lavender aren't shown here, but are in the shop!) These seem to be my best sellers and I finally got all the sold-out colors remade.

So yay success!

ALSO (UNRELATED BANTER): I was really afraid I was going to fail my calculus class. As a nerd who has never gotten lower than a B in a class I was losin' it. But SOMEHOW I managed to pass with a B-. I about barfed on my dinner when I checked my e-mail. So many good news-es.

Anyway, the garage sale is Saturday so I have a lot of work to do and banners to make and things to tag. But after that I'll have at least one full week to work on new items before my job starts. Still crossing my fingers that I get it... I probably just jinxed it.

Anyway, check out the shop and let me know what you think!

Tuesday, May 3, 2011
+ I've finished 3/5 of my finals and will have the last 2 done by tomorrow at 12.
+ My mom and I are going to participate in our neighborhood garage sale on Saturday.
+ I'm going to set up a Local Color stand at it!

+ I'm just really drained and looking forward to Thursday.

Looking for ways to stay calm.
What do you guys do to chill out?

$5 Sale Section

Monday, May 2, 2011

I added some new items to the $5 sale section of my shop. I want to clear space for new things. I'm going to be working on (yes, another) shop make-over. I always get tired of how everything looks. So there's that.

PROGRESS!

Sunday, May 1, 2011
I finally got some serious crocheting done! I made six video game cases for the shop. I worked in assembly-line fashion last night and am happy with the progress.

The only color that hasn't been featured in the shop before is the lavender which I really like. But these cases seem to be somewhat popular and I really enjoy making them, so they seemed the obvious choice. I've got some new things that I'm able to work on now. Three more days of this semester sounds amazing. After Wednesday of this week I'll be done and hopefully working full time and still able to work on Local Color.

And paint my nails. I've been wearing China Glaze's For Audrey. I see why it's such a favorite among nail polish people. It's beautiful and this picture isn't even accurate. It's so dreary and gross out here. So all my pictures are nasty. THEREFORE I have to wait to update my Etsy because I rely on natural light for pictures.

Rambles.

Hope everyone's Sundays are great despite the weather. Also, happy May!
